Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has thrown his weight behind West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to lead the opposition's INDIA bloc. Lalu dismissed objections from the Congress, saying the coalition should focus on a strong leader rather than internal disagreements.
“Mamta Banerjee should be allowed to head the INDIA bloc,” said Lalu Prasad Yadav. Reacting to the Congress's reservations, he remarked, “Their opposition will not make any difference.” His endorsement comes after Mamata Banerjee openly expressed her willingness to lead the alliance while continuing her role as West Bengal's chief minister.
Other alliance leaders echoed the sentiment. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi praised Mamata’s leadership and her efforts to counter misinformation campaigns in West Bengal. She expressed confidence that Mamata could strengthen the alliance if given the opportunity. “Her historical contributions and decisive actions make her a significant contender,” Chaturvedi told ANI.
Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu's son and senior RJD leader, stated that leadership decisions should be reached through consensus. “We have no objection to senior leaders like Mamata Banerjee leading the INDIA bloc,” he clarified.
However, the Congress has expressed unease over the proposal. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut emphasized the importance of collective decision-making, saying, “The INDIA alliance was formed collectively, and every voice must be heard. If allies like the TMC or RJD suggest changes, they should be considered.”
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule also voiced support for Mamata, recognizing her as an integral part of the bloc. Meanwhile, BJP leader Tarun Chugh criticized the alliance, calling it incoherent and burdened by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's leadership.
The INDIA bloc faces a critical juncture as debates on leadership and strategy intensify. Mamata Banerjee’s potential role could shape the coalition’s path toward challenging the ruling BJP in the upcoming elections.
